Automatic Freeze Protection for Water Lines
The HAT/FP can be used as the primary means of freeze protection or as a fail-safe backup to heat tracing and other freeze prevention methods. By responding automatically to cold conditions, the HAT/FP helps protect piping and connected equipment from freeze damage without relying on manual operation.
Multiple configurations are available to support different installation and application requirements.
Integrated Y-Strainer Option
The HAT/FP valve is available with an integrated #20-mesh Y strainer to simplify installation and help protect the valve from dirt, debris, and other contaminants. The easy-to-clean, replaceable strainer screen supports routine inspection and preventive maintenance.
Design Features
- Exclusive Thermoloid® paraffin wax actuator
- Corrosion-resistant – stainless steel body, fittings, spring, and plug
- Narrow temperature band
- Compact and low mass construction
- Two wrench flats simplify installation
- Ram-type plug design for reliable shutoff
- Optional integrated #20-mesh Y strainer
Typical Applications
Manual freeze protection depends on personnel opening valves before freezing conditions occur and closing them when protection is no longer required. Missed or delayed operation can result in frozen piping, equipment damage, and system downtime.
HAT/FP freeze protection valves respond directly to temperature changes, eliminating the need for manual valve operation.

How the HAT/FP Valve Works
Installed at the lowest point or dead leg branch, HAT/FP responds to ambient or water temperature depending on the valve configuration. Its thermostatic wax actuator senses temperature directly without external power or controls.
When temperature reaches the valve set point, typically 35°F (1.6°C), the valve opens to discharge cold water from the line. It remains open until warmer replacement water reaches the valve and the discharge temperature rises to approximately 40°F (4.4°C), at which point the valve closes.
This temperature-based operation provides automatic freeze protection without manual valve operation.
Ambient vs. Fluid Sensing Configurations
Depending on the application needs, the HAT/FP freeze protection valve can be installed in either the standard or reverse flow orientation.
In standard flow orientation, the wax actuator will sense the ambient temperature to initiate flow and then respond to water temperature once flow is established.
In reverse flow orientation, the wax actuator will sense the water temperature at the point of installation to initiate flow and continue to respond to water temperature once flow is established.
