Scald Protection for Aircraft Galley Water Systems

Aircraft galleys use potable water systems to supply faucets, coffee makers, and other onboard equipment. In some system designs, the coffee maker and faucet are connected through a shared manifold. If overheated water from the coffee maker backflows through the manifold, it can reach the faucet and create a scalding hazard for crew members or passengers.

ThermOmegaTech® aircraft scald protection valves provide automatic personnel protection against this condition. If water temperature rises above the valve’s set point, the valve automatically restricts flow to prevent overheated water from being discharged through the faucet. When the water temperature returns to an acceptable range, normal flow resumes.

Self-actuating operation provides this protection without external power, sensors, or electronic controls.

Scald Protection in Airplane Galley Faucets

Benefits of Thermostatic Galley Scald Protection

  • Protects personnel from scalding: Prevents overheated water from being discharged through aircraft galley faucets.
  • Responds automatically to unsafe temperatures: Thermostatic operation restricts flow when water exceeds the specified temperature.
  • Requires no external power: Self-actuating operation eliminates electrical controls, wiring, and sensors.
  • Supports aircraft installation requirements: Compact valve configurations can be integrated into space-constrained potable water systems.
  • Maintains operation across pressure variations: Valve response is controlled by temperature rather than system pressure.

Aircraft Galley Applications

ThermOmegaTech® scald protection valves are primarily used in aircraft galleys where coffee makers and faucets share a water manifold. Depending on the aircraft potable water system design, the valves may also protect other faucet locations connected to the same hot-water source.

HAT and TV/HAT valve configurations are available in ½” and ¾” NPT sizes with multiple temperature set points to support application-specific requirements. Stainless steel construction is standard, with 316 stainless steel and passivated configurations available where additional resistance to aircraft water-system disinfection solutions is required.
