Temperature-Driven Mechanical Actuation
A thermal actuator, also known as a wax motor or thermal linear actuator, uses temperature change to produce controlled linear movement. ThermOmegaTech® actuators use proprietary Thermoloid® thermostatic wax to generate force without external power.

Aerospace & Defense Thermal Actuator Applications
ThermOmegaTech® thermal actuators are used in aerospace and defense systems to control fluid flow, airflow, and mechanical movement as system conditions change. They provide compact, self-actuating control for aircraft, vehicles, unmanned systems, and other equipment where available space, weight, power, and system reliability must be considered.
Applications include:
- Military aircraft fuel and oil cooler assemblies: Controls fluid routing through or around a heat exchanger to maintain required operating temperatures.
- Military vehicle hydraulic cold-start systems: Bypasses cold hydraulic fluid during startup until the system reaches the required operating range.
Depending on the application, the actuator can be integrated into a cartridge or mixing/diverting valve or supplied separately for integration into the customer’s system.
High-Force Thermal Actuation
ThermOmegaTech® High Output Paraffin Actuators (HOPA) provide greater force and stroke for release and deployment mechanisms.
Applications include:
- Hold-Down Release Mechanisms (HDRMs): Provides the mechanical release that allows spacecraft components secured during launch to deploy in orbit, including antennas, solar arrays, doors, or booms.
- Deep-sea release mechanisms: Provides actuation in remote, high-pressure environments.
HOPA actuators can respond to temperature or be activated by an external heat source when actuation must occur on command.
Why Use a Thermal Actuator?
Thermal actuation can simplify systems where mechanical movement must occur automatically at a defined set point.
- No external power required: The actuator operates without electrical power or controls.
- Fewer system components: Sensors, controllers, wiring, and powered actuators may be eliminated.
- Compact integration: High force relative to size supports space- and weight-constrained equipment.
- Application-specific operation: Activation range, force, stroke, materials, and mounting can be matched to system requirements.
Custom Thermal Actuators for OEM Systems
Thermal actuation can also be applied in Industrial OEM systems where fluid flow or mechanical movement must respond directly to temperature.
Thermal actuator selection depends on more than operating temperature. Required stroke, force, return load, cycle requirements, response time, materials, available space, mounting method, and environmental conditions all influence the final design.
ThermOmegaTech® engineers work with OEM and system design teams to determine whether the application requires:
- A standard thermal actuator
- A custom actuator configuration
- A High Output Paraffin Actuator
- A thermostatic cartridge
- A complete valve
Design, machining, assembly, and testing are performed at our Warminster, Pennsylvania facility, improving communication between engineering and manufacturing throughout development and production.
For Aerospace & Defense programs, ThermOmegaTech® operates under an AS9100D-certified quality management system and is DDTC registered.
