Thermal Management for Aerospace & Defense Fluid Systems
Fuel, lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, and coolant must operate within required temperature ranges to support reliable system performance. Fluids that are too cold can affect viscosity, flow, and system warm-up, while excessive temperatures can reduce fluid performance and expose system components to damaging heat.
ThermOmegaTech® thermostatic mixing and diverting valves support fluid thermal management for military aircraft, tactical vehicles, radar systems, fuel cells, and aircraft ground support equipment.
How Thermostatic Mixing & Diverting Valves Work
ThermOmegaTech® M&D valves use a paraffin wax thermal actuator to automatically control flow through coolers, heat exchangers, and bypass circuits based on fluid temperature. This self-actuating operation requires no external power or controls.
In a diverting or thermal bypass application, the valve directs fluid through a cooler or heat exchanger when cooling is required and bypasses it when the fluid is below the valve’s set point temperature. Bypassing the cooler during cold conditions allows the fluid to reach operating temperature more quickly.
In a mixing application, the valve proportions flow between hot and cold fluid streams to maintain the required outlet temperature
WHERE IT’s USED
Aerospace & Defense Applications
Military Aircraft Fuel & Oil Cooler Temperature Control
Controls fuel and lubricating oil temperature in military aircraft cooler systems.
Hydraulic Cold-Start Bypass
Provides thermal bypass control for FMTVs and other military vehicles, allowing hydraulic fluid to reach operating temperature before cooling is required.
Military Jet Hydraulic Fluid Cooling
Controls hydraulic fluid temperature in cooling systems used on military jets.
Radar System Hydraulic Temperature Control
Maintains hydraulic fluid temperature in radar cooling systems.
Fuel Cell Thermal Control
Regulates coolant temperature in fuel cell thermal management systems.
Aircraft Ground Support Equipment
Controls air temperature during the membrane separation process in nitrogen-generation carts to support high-purity nitrogen production for aircraft servicing.
Application Example: Hydrogen Fuel Cell Thermal Management
ThermOmegaTech® M&D valve technology provides temperature control within Teledyne Energy Systems’ Subsea Supercharger. Operating in diverting mode, the valve directs coolant through the heat exchanger or bypass based on temperature to maintain the hydrogen fuel cell stack within its operating range.
This animation shows the M&D valve’s role in the cooling system.
Benefits of Self-Actuating Fluid Temperature Control
- Self-actuating operation: Requires no electrical power, sensors, wiring, or electronic valve controls.
- Thermostatic temperature control: Responds directly to fluid temperature to regulate flow through cooling and bypass circuits.
- Supports faster warm-up: Allows cooling equipment to be bypassed until the fluid reaches the required operating temperature.
- Supports space-constrained systems: Compact valve and cartridge configurations can be integrated into aircraft, vehicle, radar, fuel cell, and ground-support systems.
- Pressure independent: Operation is not affected by system pressure variations.
Thermostatic Mixing & Diverting Valves
ThermOmegaTech® M&D valves provide self-actuating mixing, diverting, and thermal bypass control for fluid systems. Standard configurations are available in multiple sizes, materials, temperature settings, and seal materials to support fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids, coolants, and other system media.
For applications with specific space, weight, flow, material, or integration requirements, thermostatic cartridges can also be incorporated directly into customer manifolds or system designs.
