Freeze Protection for Docked Naval Ships

Naval ships can rely on multiple shore-based water supply lines to support onboard systems while in port or dry dock. When these exposed lines are subjected to freezing temperatures, standing water can freeze, interrupt service, and damage piping and other system components.

ThermOmegaTech® self-actuating freeze protection valves respond directly to temperature, automatically discharging cold water as conditions approach freezing. Warmer supply water replaces the discharged water, helping protect exposed piping. As the temperature rises, the valve modulates closed.

This thermostatic control eliminates the need for manually operated freeze valves that depend on personnel to open and close them as weather conditions change. It also reduces the risk of freeze damage from valves being left closed and water waste from valves remaining open after freezing conditions have passed.

Benefits of Thermostatic Naval Freeze Protection

  • Eliminates manual operation: Responds to changing temperatures without personnel intervention.
  • Reduces water consumption: Closes automatically as warmer water reaches the valve rather than continuously discharging water.
  • Requires no external power: Self-actuating operation eliminates wiring, sensors, and electronic controls.
  • Pressure-independent operation: Valve response is controlled by temperature rather than system pressure.

Proven Water Savings at U.S. Naval Facilities

ThermOmegaTech® freeze protection valves have been installed at naval facilities across the United States, including Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport, Manchester Fuel Depot, Naval Station Everett, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, and Naval Magazine Indian Island.

At Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, a $25,000 investment in 100 freeze protection devices was reported to save approximately $290,000 annually. The reduction in water consumption was significant enough that the City of Bremerton water department contacted the shipyard about the change. Source: Kitsap Sun

Across Naval Base Kitsap, automatic freeze protection valves installed on water distribution lines serving piers and dry docks were reported to save more than 230 million gallons of water annually. Source: U.S. Navy
