Freeze Protection for Diesel Locomotive Cooling Systems
Diesel locomotive cooling systems are vulnerable to freezing when engines are shut down during cold-weather conditions. As temperature falls, water in the system can freeze and expand, potentially cracking lines, tanks, and other components.
Freeze-related damage can require extensive repairs, take locomotives out of service, and disrupt operating schedules. Effective locomotive freeze protection provides a way to protect water-bearing systems when engine heat is no longer available. ThermOmegaTech® provides thermostatic solutions for freeze protection and other railroad applications.
Engine Idling vs. Thermostatic Freeze Protection
Keeping a locomotive engine running guarantees the water-cooling system won’t freeze, but continuous idling consumes fuel and increases emissions.
A thermostatic locomotive freeze protection valve provides an alternative by opening a drain path when coolant approaches freezing. This provides protection when the engine is shut down.
How GURU® Locomotive Freeze Protection Valves Work
GURU® Plugs are water-sensing thermostatic drain valves that respond directly to engine coolant temperature rather than ambient temperatures.
During normal locomotive operation, coolant remains above the valve’s set point, so the GURU® Plug stays closed and will not trip or dump. If the locomotive is shut down and coolant temperature falls to the set point, the plug snaps open to rapidly drain the system before freezing can damage water-bearing components.
Once the locomotive is ready to return to service, the GURU® Plug can be reset and rearmed as part of the system refill procedure.
Applications
GURU® Freeze Protection for Locomotive Systems
ThermOmegaTech® provides GURU® freeze protection valves for several locomotive applications.
Standard Locomotive Cooling System Protection
The GURU® DL2.1 protects diesel locomotive cooling systems and other onboard water-bearing equipment.
High-Capacity Drain Protection
The Magnum GURU® provides higher discharge capacity for systems requiring faster drainage, draining twice as fast as the standard GURU® Plug.
Compressor Head Freeze Protection
GURU® DL2.1 CH and CHS Plugs protect water-cooled locomotive air compressor heads.
Benefits of Automatic Rail Freeze Protection
- Self-operating – requires no external power source or controls
- Reduces reliance on continuous engine idling – provides freeze protection when locomotives are shut down
- Will not trip while the locomotive is running – prevents unnecessary draining during normal operation
- Water-sensing operation – not affected by airflow or air temperature surrounding the valve
- Rapid draining – quickly drains the system to reduce freeze-related equipment damage and downtime
GURU® Plugs are trusted as the railroad industry standard for freeze protection in North America. ThermOmegaTech® works with locomotive OEMs, all Class I freight railroads, hundreds of Class II and III operators, and the largest passenger rail operator in the U.S., helping protect millions of dollars in locomotives and rolling stock each year.
Maintenance Support for GURU® Freeze Protection Valves
Routine inspection and maintenance help ensure locomotive freeze protection systems are ready for cold-weather operation.
ThermOmegaTech® provides product documentation, reset and rearm tools like the GURU® Flag and Clip or GURU® Flag and Key, and the CHCT tool used to flush out debris from the water-cooled compressor head. We also offer a GURU® Rebuild Program for maintaining GURU® Plugs throughout their service life.
