Interchangeable Cartridge Freeze Prevention Valve
The thermostatic IC/FP uses an interchangeable cartridge design that is tee-mounted into the protected piping, positioning the thermal actuator directly in the water stream. Available in ½″ and ¾″ NPT configurations with brass or stainless-steel construction, the valve can serve as the primary method of freeze protection or as a fail-safe backup on heat-traced systems.
For applications requiring ambient-temperature sensing, see the HAT/FP Freeze Protection Valve.
Design Features
- Exclusive Thermoloid® paraffin wax actuator
- Corrosion-resistant construction
- Narrow temperature band
- Compact and low mass construction
- Two wrench flats for easy installation
- Ram-type plug for reliable shutoff
Typical Applications

The IC/FP supports water pipe freeze protection across a range of industrial and emergency water systems, including:
- Heat-traced piping
- Insulated water lines
- Safety shower and eyewash supply piping

IC/FP Installation
The IC/FP Freeze Protection Valve is installed at the lowest point within the protected system and tee-mounted so the thermal actuator remains positioned in the water stream. Installation requires a minimum 1″ tee with either a 1″ × ¾″ NPT reducer bushing or a 1¼″ × ¾″ × 1¼″ NPT reducer tee without a bushing. Adequate internal clearance must be provided for the actuator.
How the IC/FP Valve Works
When the water temperature falls below the valve’s specified set point, typically 35°F (1.7°C), the thermal actuator modulates the valve open to discharge cold water. Once warmer makeup water raises the temperature approximately 5°F above the open set point, typically 40°F (4.4°C), the valve modulates closed. Because the actuator remains continuously wetted, operation is based on water temperature rather than ambient air temperature.
For solar applications, install a minimum 12-inch dead leg upstream of the IC/FP to help protect the valve from residual fluid temperatures that may reach or exceed 300°F (148.9°C).
