Why High-Temperature Wastewater Discharge Must Be Controlled
Commercial and industrial equipment can discharge water or steam above allowable limits for the drainage system. Many plumbing codes and local requirements use 140°F (60°C) as the maximum allowable discharge, although requirements may vary based on the applicable code and piping material.
Excessive heat can damage PVC drain piping and downstream components, create safety concerns, and increase compliance risk. Drain tempering cools hot discharge before it enters the drainage system, helping protect piping from over-temperature conditions.
ThermOmegaTech® thermostatic wastewater tempering valves respond directly to changing discharge conditions to prevent hot effluent from reaching the drain. Different valve configurations are available for commercial plumbing and industrial applications.
How Thermostatic Drain Tempering Works
ThermOmegaTech® drain tempering valves are installed in the equipment discharge line ahead of the drain. A thermostatic actuator continuously senses wastewater temperature.
When the discharge rises above the valve’s set point, the valve opens the cold-water inlet. Cold water mixes with the hot effluent to cool it before it reaches the drain.
The valve reduces cold-water flow as the temperature drops and closes when it is 10°F below the full open temperature. This on-demand operation minimizes water use compared with continuously flowing systems without external power.
ITV Industrial Tempering Valve for Process Equipment
The ITV Valve is designed for industrial equipment and process applications that require control of hot effluent before discharge.
The ITV is used in breweries, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical facilities, and municipal sewage applications.
Typical ITV applications include:
- Autoclaves
- Boilers
- Humidifiers
DTV Drain Tempering Valve for Commercial Plumbing
The DTV Valve is designed for commercial plumbing applications where high-temperature wastewater must be cooled before entering the drain.
The DTV is used in commercial facilities including schools and universities, restaurants and brewpubs, hospitals and healthcare facilities, and hotels and hospitality properties.
Typical DTV applications include:
- Mechanical rooms
- Commercial kitchens and dishwashers
- Sterile processing equipment
Benefits of Thermostatic Drain Temperature Control
- Supports plumbing code compliance by helping maintain discharge within applicable drain limits
- Protects PVC drain piping and downstream components from over-temperature conditions
- Minimizes water waste by supplying cooling water only when needed
- Compact design simplifies integration into equipment and space-constrained piping systems
- Provides self-actuating thermostatic control without external power, sensors, or electronic controls
