Freeze Protection for Passenger Rail Car Water Systems
Passenger rail cars use potable water systems to supply onboard galleys and toilets. During normal operation, car heat helps protect these tanks and water lines from freezing.
During layovers, locomotive switching, power outages, or other periods when heat is unavailable, interior temperatures can fall toward freezing. Water left in tanks and piping can freeze and expand, potentially damaging water lines, tanks, and connected equipment.

How GURU PC® Passenger Rail Freeze Protection Valves Work
GURU PC® valves are ambient-sensing thermostatic drain valves that continuously respond to the air temperature surrounding the valve.
When ambient temperature falls to the valve’s 35°F set point, the GURU PC® opens to rapidly drain the passenger car’s potable water system. Removing the water helps protect tanks, piping, galleys, and sanitary systems from freeze damage.
Once car heat is restored and the valve warms, the GURU PC® modulates closed so the water system can be refilled before the car returns to service.
The valve operates mechanically without external power. An optional electric heater assembly can warm and close the valve more quickly after activation, helping reduce the time required to return the car to service.
