Cooling Fluid Control Valve Overview
The TV/HAT-RA is a self-actuating fluid temperature control valve that opens as temperature rises to increase cooling flow. It can also function as a thermal relief valve to help prevent overtemperature conditions caused by pump deadheading, low-flow operation, or changing heat loads.
For heating applications that require the valve to open as fluid temperature falls, use the TV/HAT fluid temperature control valve.
Valve Configurations
TV/HAT-RA
Standard configuration for controlling cooling media flow based on inline fluid temperature.
TV/HAT-RA-LP
Includes a controlled leak port that allows the actuator to sense changing upstream fluid temperature when the valve is otherwise closed.
Design Features
- Exclusive Thermoloid® paraffin wax actuator
- Fully wetted thermal actuator for direct response to fluid temperature
- Compact, low-mass design
- Corrosion-resistant – stainless steel body, fittings, spring, and plug
- Ram-type plug design for tight, reliable shutoff
- Operates in any orientation and a narrow temperature band
- Wide choice of set points
- Unaffected by pressure variations
Typical Applications
Cooling Fluid Control
The TV/HAT-RA can be used as a cooling water control valve to remove heat and help maintain the required operating temperature in:
- Liquid cooling systems
- Water-cooled heat exchangers
- Water-cooled compressors
- Injection molding equipment
- Die-casting equipment
- Welding equipment
- Electrical equipment
- Engines
Thermostatic Balancing
The TV/HAT-RA-LP can provide thermostatic balancing at the cooling media outlet of individual loads. By modulating flow in response to outlet temperature, the valve adjusts cooling flow at each load as outlet temperature changes. Typical applications include injection, rubber, and plastic molding equipment, die casting, and platen processes.

TV/HAT-RA Valve Installation
For pump thermal relief applications, install the TV/HAT-RA as close to the pump casing as practical to minimize the distance between the valve and the temperature being controlled.
When used as an after-flow controller, the TV/HAT-RA-LP is installed on the cooling water outlet of the equipment.
How the TV/HAT-RA Valve Works
The thermostatic cooling valve uses a thermal actuator to continuously sense the temperature of cooling water, glycol, or other cooling media and regulate flow. Because the valve is reverse-acting, it opens as temperature rises.
As temperature reaches the TV/HAT-RA operating range, the thermal actuator begins to modulate the valve open. If temperature remains above the set point, the valve continues to open, allowing additional fluid discharge. As the temperature falls, the valve modulates toward the closed position, reducing flow. This continuous modulation helps maintain the required operating temperature as conditions change.
For TV/HAT-RA-LP models, the valve maintains a small amount of controlled leakage while otherwise closed. This flow allows the thermal actuator to sense changing fluid temperature upstream in the system.
