Steam-Powered Tepid Water for Safety Showers
The Therm-O-Mix® Station is an instantaneous, steam-fired tepid water system for emergency safety showers, eyewash stations, and combination fixtures. Available in standard and low-pressure configurations, the station provides 80°F (26.67°C) tepid water and is designed to serve one shower/eyewash combination at a time.
For facilities without steam, ThermOmegaTech® offers the ESS Tepid Water Heater for applications requiring a dedicated electric hot-water source.
Design Features
- Exclusive Thermoloid® wax thermal actuator
- Compact heat exchanger transfers thermal energy without allowing plant steam to enter the emergency water supply
- Two steam pressure configurations – standard model supports 45–60 PSIG saturated steam; low-pressure model supports 15–30 PSIG
- Durable enclosure can be readily removed for service
- Union connections simplify installation
- Steam trap on steam inlet included
Benefits
- Easy to retrofit on existing shower or combination face/eyewash stations
- Maintains tepid water temperature by providing constant 80°F output with inlet water temperature between 40°F and 80°F
- No insulated storage tanks or expensive recirculation systems are required
- Self-purging – no need for elaborate drainage system
- No electrical connections – supports installation in explosion-proof and outdoor environments
Typical Applications
The Therm-O-Mix® Station is used to supply tepid water to emergency wash equipment in facilities with available steam, including:
- Chemical processing facilities
- Petrochemical and refining facilities
- Manufacturing plants
- Power generation facilities
- Other industrial sites with emergency safety showers or eyewash equipment

Compliance
- ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 specifies tepid flushing fluid for emergency showers and eyewash equipment, with tepid defined as 60–100°F. The Therm-O-Mix® Station provides an 80°F outlet for emergency fixtures when the available steam, water, flow, and installation conditions meet the system requirements. Final system design should be confirmed against the applicable standard edition and project requirements.
- Designed to meet ASSE 1071 requirements.
How the Therm-O-Mix® Station Works
This water heating system should be installed near the shower and piped into a facility’s steam and cold water supply lines.
The Therm-O-Mix® Station remains on standby until an emergency shower or eyewash is activated. The resulting pressure drop acts on a diaphragm to open the steam control valve (V-3), allowing steam and cold water to flow through separate sides of the heat exchanger.
Heat from the steam transfers to the water without the two fluids mixing. The heated water then passes through redundant mechanical temperature controls, including the tempering valve (V-5) and final mixing valve (V-1), where it blends with cold water to control the outlet at approximately 80°F (27°C). Additional mechanical controls regulate steam input, shut off steam flow during an over-temperature condition, and flush elevated-temperature water from the unit during standby.
This mechanical operating sequence provides on-demand emergency shower tepid water without external electrical power. If the water supply is interrupted, the steam valve remains closed to prevent uncontrolled heating.
