HAT/SP Scald Protection Valve

Applications: Scald Protection, Tepid Water Delivery

Systems: Safety Showers

Industries: Industrial

The HAT/SP is a self-operating scald protection valve that automatically bleeds overheated water from safety shower, facewash, or eyewash piping to help prevent dangerously hot water from reaching the point of use.

Key Features

Self-Actuating Operation – Requires no external power, sensors, or controls
Water Conservation - Discharges only the water required for scald protection
Emergency Equipment Protection – Supports ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 water temperature requirements

Scald Protection for Safety Showers and Eyewash Stations

The HAT/SP is a thermostatic anti-scald valve that provides automatic hot water scald protection for emergency safety showers, eyewash stations, and facewash equipment where water in exposed piping can become overheated by solar radiation, heat tracing, or other heat sources.

By controlling over-temperature conditions in the line, the valve helps prevent dangerously hot water from reaching personnel during emergency use.

Integrated Y-Strainer Option

The HAT/SP valve is available with an integrated #20-mesh Y strainer to simplify installation and help protect the valve from dirt, debris, and other contaminants. The easy-to-clean, replaceable strainer screen supports routine inspection and preventive maintenance.

Design Features

  • Exclusive Thermoloid® wax thermal actuator
  • Corrosion-resistant – stainless steel body, fittings, spring, and plug
  • Compact, low-mass – fast response
  • Two wrench flats simplify installation
  • Ram-type plug for reliable and tight shutoff
  • Optional integrated #20-mesh Y strainer

Typical Applications

Common installation environments include:

  • Outdoor safety showers and eyewash stations
  • Piping exposed to direct solar radiation
  • Steam-traced or electrically heat-traced piping
  • Insulated emergency water lines
  • Systems requiring scald protection as a backup to heat tracing

How the HAT/SP Valve Works

The HAT/SP scald protection valve should be installed at the highest point on an emergency safety station to continuously sense and automatically bleed off the excessively hot water. When the sensed temperature rises above the valve set point, the valve modulates open to establish flow.

Cooler water from the supply will backfill the line and cause the valve to modulate closed once the water temperature falls to 10°F below the open set point.

Ambient vs. Fluid Sensing Configurations

Ambient sensing position (standard flow) – The thermal actuator will respond to atmospheric temperature changes to initiate flow and then respond to water temperature once flow is established. The valve should be exposed to the same thermal conditions as the protected piping.

  • More conservative choice
  • More tolerant of dirty water
  • Good choice for warmer climates

Fluid sensing position (reverse flow) – Responds directly to water temperature at the valve location.

  • Used as a backup with insulated piping or heat tracing
  • Ideal for colder climates
  • Results in less nuisance dumping/draining
