Hot Water Thermal Disinfection
Thermal disinfection water management strategies periodically raise water temperatures throughout a DHW system to help mitigate Legionella and other waterborne bacteria growth.
The CSUTD-D provides thermostatic balancing during normal operation while supporting the elevated water temperatures used during scheduled thermal disinfection cycles.
Key Advantages
- Reduces Balancing Labor and Callbacks – Self-actuating operation eliminates manual balancing and readjustment as system conditions change.
- Direct Replacement for Manual Balancing Valves – Converts manual balancing to automatic temperature-based control.
- Resists Debris Buildup – Two high-thrust thermal actuators help keep the valve orifices free of debris.
- Built for Long-Term DHW Service – Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel construction and a 10-year warranty support long service life.
Typical Applications
The CSUTD-D is designed for commercial domestic hot water recirculation systems that incorporate scheduled thermal disinfection cycles. Typical installations include hospitals and healthcare facilities, hotels, schools, high-rise buildings, and multifamily properties.

How the Thermal Disinfection Balancing Valve Works
Normal Balancing
During normal DHW operation, the valve remains open as the branch or riser warms. The valve is fully open approximately 10°F below its closing temperature. As water approaches the factory-set balancing temperature, the low-temperature actuator modulates towards its closed position, directing flow to branches that have not yet reached temperature.
Thermal Disinfection
When system temperature increases for a scheduled thermal disinfection cycle, the low-temperature actuator reopens the valve, allowing elevated-temperature water to circulate through the branch or riser.
High-Temperature Control
When water reaches the factory-set thermal disinfection temperature, the second high-temperature actuator modulates the valve toward its closed position.
A small bypass flow remains to prevent dead-heading the recirculation pump.

Connection & Monitoring Options
Viega® ProPress® Connections
Available on any CircuitSolver® thermal disinfection configuration for integration into ProPress piping systems. Viega® Smart Connect Technology helps identify unpressed connections, supporting faster installation and system startup.
Uponor ProPEX® Connections
Available on any CircuitSolver® thermal disinfection configuration for installations using ProPEX® expansion-type PEX piping. ProPEX connections reduce the number of piping connections and eliminate the need for torches, glues, gauges, solder, or calibration during installation.
Thermometer Assembly
Provides an easy-to-read dial for in-line temperature verification. The assembly can be integrated with any CircuitSolver® thermal disinfection configuration or purchased separately for new or existing installations. Measures water temperatures from 50°F to 300°F (10°C to 149°C).
Integrated connection and monitoring configurations are assembled and tested before shipment to reduce field assembly requirements.
