Automatic Cold Water Recirculation Balancing
Unlike a manual balancing valve that maintains a fixed flow setting, the CircuitSolver® Cold Water Balancing Valve uses thermostatic control. As water temperature changes, the valve automatically adjusts recirculation flow to maintain the specified return temperature.
Learn more about Cold Water BalancingCircuitSolver® Cold Water Advantages
- Self-Actuating Operation – Requires no external power, sensors, or electronic controls.
- Reduced Startup Labor & Callbacks – Eliminates manual balancing and reduces callbacks for rebalancing as system conditions change.
- Corrosion-Resistant Construction – Stainless-steel construction supports long service life in potable water systems.
- High-Thrust Actuator – Helps keep the valve orifice free of debris for consistent operation.
- Installation Flexibility – Union, assembly, connection, and monitoring options support different piping and installation requirements.
- 10 Year Warranty – Provides 10 years of product coverage.
Typical Applications
CircuitSolver® thermostatic cold water balancing valves are used in new and retrofit domestic cold water recirculation systems in hospitals and healthcare facilities, hotels, schools and universities, multifamily and high-rise buildings, and other commercial facilities implementing building water management strategies.
Thermostatic balancing is also recognized in VA plumbing guidance for both hot and cold water recirculation systems.

How the CircuitSolver Cold Water Valve Operates
The CircuitSolver® Cold Water valve is installed at the end of each branch or riser in a domestic cold water system (DCWS) to automatically and continuously monitor the water temperature. A Thermoloid® thermal actuator modulates the valve open or closed in response to changing water temperature to maintain the specified temperature in the line.
The valve will be in its closed* position when the water temperature in the supply branch is under the valve’s set-point and only opens to establish flow when it rises above the set-point.
Because each CircuitSolver® responds independently to the water temperature in its branch or riser, recirculation flow automatically adjusts as conditions change to maintain more uniform cold water temperatures throughout the system.
*CircuitSolver® never fully closes. A small bypass flow is maintained to the return to prevent the recirculation pump from dead-heading.
CircuitSolver® Cold Water Valve Configurations
| Configuration | Includes | Installation Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| CircuitSolver® Union Cold Water (CSU-CW) | Integrated union with O-ring and optional check valve | Reduces field-installed components and potential leak points. |
| CircuitSolver® Union Assembly Cold Water (CSUA-CW) | Union with O-ring, optional check valve, and isolation ball valves | Factory-assembled package reduces field-installed components and labor. |
Connection & Monitoring Options
Viega® ProPress® Connections
Available on any CircuitSolver® Cold Water valve configuration for integration into ProPress piping systems. Viega® Smart Connect Technology helps identify unpressed connections, supporting faster installation and system startup.
Uponor ProPEX® Connections
Available on any CircuitSolver® Cold Water valve configuration for installations using ProPEX® expansion-type PEX piping. ProPEX connections reduce the number of piping connections and eliminate the need for torches, glues, gauges, solder, or calibration during installation.
Thermometer Assembly
Provides an easy-to-read dial for in-line temperature verification. The assembly can be integrated with any CircuitSolver® Cold Water valve configuration or purchased separately for new or existing installations. Measures water temperatures from 50°F to 300°F (10°C to 149°C).
Integrated connection and monitoring configurations are assembled and tested before shipment to reduce field assembly requirements.
