High-capacity Rail Freeze Protection Overview
The Magnum GURU® valve provides increased discharge capacity for diesel locomotive cooling systems. Its almost full 1.2-inch discharge opening can drain a 300-gallon tank in less than 14 minutes.
The valve uses ThermOmegaTech’s self-actuating Thermoloid® thermal actuator. The cartridge design supports straightforward system refill and field maintenance.
Design Features
- SAE threads and an O-ring seal eliminate the need for Teflon tape or pipe dope for straightforward installation, field maintenance, and replacement
- Exclusive Thermoloid® paraffin wax actuator provides self-actuating operation
- Slotted actuator design helps prevent nuisance releases when refilling the cooling system with cold water
- Design excludes cooling water chemicals and other debris from moving parts
- All moving parts are stainless steel
- Paint mask minimizes accidental paint-ins during locomotive service
- A cartridge knob supports installation and removal in restricted locations
- Optional domed anti-tamper cap eliminates ability to tamper with the valve resetting stem
When to Use the Magnum GURU®
The Magnum GURU® is intended for higher-volume locomotive cooling systems where increased discharge capacity is required to reduce system drain time. Applications include locomotive engine cooling systems, standby diesel heating circulators, onboard tanks and piping, and backup freeze protection in the event of shutdown.
Maintenance & Rebuild Support
ThermOmegaTech® offers a Rebuild Program to support ongoing maintenance of GURU® freeze protection valves and help keep fleet equipment in service.

How the Magnum GURU® Operates
The Magnum GURU® responds directly to locomotive engine coolant temperature rather than surrounding airflow or air temperature. While circulating coolant remains above the valve’s release temperature, the valve stays closed during locomotive operation.
When coolant reaches the specified 35°F or 40°F release temperature, the cartridge releases and provides an almost full 1.2-inch opening for high-capacity drainage of the cooling system before freeze damage occurs.
Resetting and Refilling
After activation, the cartridge is reheated and reinserted into the valve body. During system refill, the GURU® Flag and Clip or GURU® Flag and Key can be used to prevent cold refill water from prematurely releasing the cartridge. Once the system is filled and reheated, the valve automatically rearms.
