Thermostatic Control for Railroad Applications
For more than 40 years, ThermOmegaTech® has provided self-actuating thermostatic temperature control solutions for the railroad industry. Our industry-standard GURU® railroad freeze protection valves protect locomotive cooling systems and passenger rail water systems throughout North America without requiring external power or controls. Leveraging the same proven thermostatic technology, ThermOmegaTech® also supports other railroad thermal management applications where automatic temperature control is critical.
Our engineering team works directly with railroad OEMs, operators, and maintenance teams to help identify the appropriate solution for each application.
Locomotive Freeze Protection
Locomotive cooling system freeze protection prevents costly damage when diesel-electric locomotives are shut down in freezing conditions. If the cooling water freezes inside the engine cooling system, it can crack piping, damage engine components, and require extensive repairs before the locomotive can return to service. ThermOmegaTech®’s GURU® freeze protection valves automatically drain the cooling system when temperatures approach freezing, protecting equipment without external power or operator intervention.
Explore ApplicationPassenger Rail Car Freeze Protection
Passenger rail car freeze protection is critical for onboard potable water systems during cold weather operations. When the locomotive is shut down and heat is no longer supplied to the rail car, water lines serving lavatories and galleys become susceptible to freezing, resulting in damaged piping, costly repairs, and equipment downtime. ThermOmegaTech®’s GURU PC® valve automatically drains the system before freezing conditions can damage the passenger rail water system.

Domestic Hot Water Recirculating
CircuitSolver® is a thermostatic, self-actuating balancing valve that automatically and continuously adjusts the flow of a domestic hot water recirculation system to maintain a specified temperature at the end of each branch or riser. CircuitSolver® regulates flow in response to heat loss and demand fluctuations, reducing labor time and eliminating callbacks.
Learn MoreDrain Tempering Valve (DTV)
Drain water from commercial equipment that exceeds 140°F (60°C) must be sufficiently tempered down before entering public sewers to comply with plumbing regulations and prevent damage to PVC piping. The drain tempering valve (DTV) is installed in-line to monitor effluent continuously and automatically apportion cold water flow, simplifying code compliance.
Learn MoreESS Water Heater for Safety Showers
The ESS Water Heater is a packaged system designed to satisfy ANSI Z358.1-2014 requirements for tepid water delivery to an emergency drench system. The unit uses the Therm-O-Mix® WWM Mixing Valve to combine hot and cold water to an OSHA-compliant 85°F (29.4°C) and will continue to do so even if electricity is interrupted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get Answers to Your RAILROAD Questions
Find answers to common questions about GURU® railroad freeze protection valves, locomotive and passenger rail applications, maintenance recommendations, rebuild options, and accessories.
How do GURU® railroad freeze protection valves work?
The GURU® Plug for locomotives contains a self-actuating thermostatic actuator that continuously monitors water temperature. When the temperature reaches the valve’s activation point, the valve automatically snaps the valve open to rapidly drain the cooling system before freezing can occur.
The GURU PC® Valve for passenger rail cars monitors ambient temperature. When the temperature reaches its activation point, the valve gradually opens to drain the potable water system. As ambient temperatures rise above the valve’s set point, the valve automatically modulates closed.
How often should GURU® valves be replaced?
ThermOmegaTech® recommends replacing or rebuilding GURU® Plugs every 18–24 months. As the thermostatic actuator ages, it gradually loses a small amount of stroke, causing the release and manual reset temperatures to increase. While this maintains safe freeze protection, it can eventually lead to nuisance dumping.
To extend service life and reduce replacement costs, ThermOmegaTech® offers the GURU® Rebuild Program.
What is the difference between a GURU® DL 2.1 and a Magnum GURU®?
Both products protect locomotive cooling systems from freeze damage using the same self-actuating thermostatic operating principle. The primary difference is discharge capacity.
The GURU® DL 2.1 is our standard locomotive freeze protection valve. The Magnum GURU® features an approximately 1.2-inch full-flow bore, allowing it to drain locomotive cooling systems at approximately twice the rate of the DL 2.1.
The Magnum GURU® also uses 1-7/8″-12 UN straight threads with an O-ring seal, while the GURU® DL 2.1 uses NPT threads.
