Combined Temperature Control and Pressure Relief
The TBV-PR combines thermostatic flow control and pressure relief in a single cartridge valve for hydraulic, lubrication, and equipment cooling systems. By integrating both functions into one component, it can reduce the need for separately installed valves and simplify cooling circuit design.
Designed for integration into 4-way manifolds, the TBV-PR is available in brass and stainless steel with multiple temperature and pressure relief settings to accommodate different operating requirements.
Design Features
- Exclusive Thermoloid® thermal wax actuator
- Reactive, compact, and low mass – fast response
- Corrosion-resistant, long service life
- Few moving parts – reduce system wear
Common Thermal Bypass Applications
- Hydraulic and Lube Oil Cooling Systems – Controls fluid routing while providing pressure relief if the cooler circuit becomes restricted.
- Engine and Compressor Cooling – Bypasses the cooler during warm-up and provides an alternate flow path under excessive pressure conditions.
- Equipment Cooling Circuits – Combines thermostatic bypass control and pressure relief where space or component count is a design consideration.

Thermal Bypass Valve Operation
The TBV-PR thermostatic bypass valve uses a thermal actuator to regulate fluid flow based on temperature, while an integrated pressure relief mechanism provides protection against excessive system pressure.
Below Set Point: When fluid temperature is below the valve’s operating range, the bypass passage remains open, allowing fluid to bypass the heat exchanger or cooler during system warm-up.
At Set Point: The thermal actuator extends, closing the bypass passage and directing fluid through the heat exchanger or cooler. The valve typically transitions from fully open to fully closed over approximately 10°F.
Pressure Relief Override: If system pressure exceeds the specified relief setting, the pressure relief mechanism opens the bypass passage, providing an alternative flow path around a restricted or blocked cooler.
