Scald Protection for Safety Showers and Eyewash Stations
The HAT/SP is a thermostatic anti-scald valve that provides automatic hot water scald protection for emergency safety showers, eyewash stations, and facewash equipment where water in exposed piping can become overheated by solar radiation, heat tracing, or other heat sources.
By controlling over-temperature conditions in the line, the valve helps prevent dangerously hot water from reaching personnel during emergency use.
Integrated Y-Strainer Option
The HAT/SP valve is available with an integrated #20-mesh Y strainer to simplify installation and help protect the valve from dirt, debris, and other contaminants. The easy-to-clean, replaceable strainer screen supports routine inspection and preventive maintenance.

- Temperatures up to 105°F meet ANSI Z358.1 standards.
How the HAT/SP Valve Works
The HAT/SP scald protection valve should be installed at the highest point on an emergency safety station to continuously sense and automatically bleed off the excessively hot water. When the sensed temperature rises above the valve set point, the valve modulates open to establish flow.
Cooler water from the supply will backfill the line and cause the valve to modulate closed once the water temperature falls to 10°F below the open set point.
Ambient vs. Fluid Sensing Configurations
Ambient sensing position (standard flow) – The thermal actuator will respond to atmospheric temperature changes to initiate flow and then respond to water temperature once flow is established. The valve should be exposed to the same thermal conditions as the protected piping.
- More conservative choice
- More tolerant of dirty water
- Good choice for warmer climates
Fluid sensing position (reverse flow) – Responds directly to water temperature at the valve location.
- Used as a backup with insulated piping or heat tracing
- Ideal for colder climates
- Results in less nuisance dumping/draining
