Drain Tempering Valve (DTV)

Applications: Drain Tempering

Industries: Commercial Plumbing

The DTV drain tempering valve automatically tempers high-temperature discharge before it enters a drain or sewer system. The thermostatic valve responds directly to discharge temperature and introduces cold water only as needed.

Key Features

Plumbing Code Compliance – Tempers high-temperature discharge to help maintain drain temperatures within applicable plumbing code limits
PVC Piping Protection – Reduces over-temperature conditions that can damage downstream PVC drain piping
Self-Operating – Completely mechanical operation responds to discharge temperature without external power or controls
Reduced Water Waste – Modulates cooling water based on discharge temperature and closes as tempering demand decreases

Drain Temperature Control Overview

Drain water from commercial equipment exceeding 140°F (60°C) can be costly – leading to failed inspections, fines, business interruptions, or injury and damage to personnel and equipment.

The DTV is installed directly in the drain line to temper high-temperature discharge with cold water before it enters a public drain or sewer system. Its compact design installs using standard pipe fittings and tools, making it easy to integrate into new or existing piping systems and adaptable to a wide range of drain sizes and piping arrangements.

Design Features

  • Exclusive Thermoloid® wax thermal actuator
  • Rugged, clog-resistant valve design
  • Operates in any orientation
  • Modulates to conserve cooling water
  • Effluent tempering capacity is limited only by the cold-water flow rate through the DTV

Plumbing Applications

  • Commercial Kitchens and Dishwashers
  • Sterile Processing Equipment
  • Mechanical Rooms

Markets Served

  • Schools and Universities
  • Restaurants and Brewpubs
  • Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities
  • Hotels and Hospitality

Recommended Accessories

For DTV installations, most local plumbing codes require a check valve or backflow preventer to isolate the drain line from the potable water supply. When either device is used, a water hammer arrestor must be installed between it and the DTV.

Failure to install the required water hammer arrestor may cause permanent damage to the DTV and void the warranty.

ThermOmegaTech® offers an optional water hammer arrestor and backflow preventers. Contact us or your local representative for more information on these products.

How the Drain Tempering Valve Works

The DTV functions as a wastewater tempering valve installed directly in the drain line, where it monitors the temperature of discharged hot effluent. When the effluent exceeds the valve’s set-point, the DTV opens to inject cold water. As the effluent cools, the valve automatically modulates to reduce the cold-water inlet flow. At 10°F below the full open temperature, the cold-water inlet is fully closed to conserve water.
