GURU® Rebuild Program

The GURU® Rebuild Program supports reliable freeze protection for existing GURU® freeze protection valves used on locomotives and passenger rail cars.

ThermOmegaTech® offers two service options based on the product:

  • Factory rebuild service for GURU® Plugs used on locomotives.
  • Field-service replacement cartridge kits for GURU PC® valves used on passenger rail cars.

Following the recommended maintenance interval helps maintain proper valve operation, minimizes nuisance dumping, and ensures reliable freeze protection throughout the service life of the equipment.

GURU® Plugs for Locomotives

Thousands of locomotives rely on GURU® Plugs to automatically drain engine cooling systems before freeze damage can occur.

The GURU® Rebuild Program allows customers to return used GURU® Plugs to ThermOmegaTech® for refurbishment. Each rebuilt valve receives a new thermal actuator and other internal components before undergoing the same inspection and performance testing as a newly manufactured valve.

Recommendations on Maintenance

ThermOmegaTech® recommends changing, replacing, or rebuilding the GURU® Plugs every 18 to 24 months. As the thermal actuator ages, it gradually loses a small amount of stroke. This causes the valve’s release temperature and manual reset temperature to slowly increase. While this characteristic maintains freeze protection, it can eventually result in nuisance dumping if the valve remains in service beyond the recommended maintenance interval.

Routine replacement helps maintain consistent valve performance and dependable locomotive freeze protection.

Cap Color Identification

Every GURU® Plug includes a colored cap that identifies the year the valve was manufactured.

Five cap colors rotate on a repeating schedule, allowing maintenance personnel to quickly estimate valve age during inspections. The exact month and year of manufacture are also laser marked on the top of every cap.

How the Rebuild Program Works

  • Return the valves to ThermOmegaTech® with a purchase order.
  • All internal components are removed and discarded. Only the cartridge body and hex nut are reused.
  • A new thermal actuator and internal components are installed into the cartridge body.
  • The rebuilt cartridge undergoes 100% inspection and performance testing.
  • The hex nut is assembled and inspected.
  • The cartridge is installed into the hex nut.
  • Every rebuilt valve receives a final 100% pop test before shipment.

GURU® PC for Passenger Rail Cars

GURU PC® valves protect passenger rail car potable water-bearing systems from freeze damage.

Like GURU® Plugs, GURU PC® valves are recommended for replacement every 18 to 24 months because the thermal actuator gradually loses stroke over time. This increases the valve’s release temperature and may eventually cause nuisance dumping while continuing to protect against freezing.

Unlike locomotive GURU® Plugs, GURU PC® valves are not returned to ThermOmegaTech® for rebuilding. Instead, maintenance is performed in the field using replacement cartridge kits.

How the Replacement Cartridge Kit Works

  • Contact the ThermOmegaTech® Railroad product team to purchase a cartridge kit.
  • After receiving the kit, remove all internal components from the installed valve.
  • Clean the valve body, threads, internal surfaces, and valve port of all dirt, mineral buildup, and debris.
  • Install the replacement cartridge components into the valve body.
  • Verify proper operation using freeze spray before returning the system to service.

All maintenance and replacements should be performed in the field using the provided kits.
